GUTS & DDC in Las Vegas

Vegas Golfers are introduced to GUTS and DDC (Double Disc Court)

After the weekly league events and on Wednesday nights at Sunset Park, a small group of devote golfers have slowly been turning other golfers on to other disc sports. Frequently after rounds more and more golfers are joining in pick up games of GUTS and DDC. The support for DDC has been so positive, a league will begin shortly lead by Jeff Jacquart, Pat Bragg, Jeff Kennedy and myself. We are still figuring out a points system for random draw DDC and plan on running the DDC league immediately following the DG league events on Sundays.

I'll have some pics up by the end of the week of some of the guys and gals playing.

DDC is played by two teams of two players each. The courts are 13 meters square and 17 meters apart. You get one point for a throw that lands and stays in the opponents' court. Your opponents get one point if your throw touches outside their court. If you can arrange it so that the other team is touching both discs at the same time, you get two points. That is called "doubling" your opponents.

What is Guts?

Guts is a sport played between two teams of five players each. The game is played to 21 points with a 2 point margin of victory required. To start play, one defensive team lines up fingertip-to-fingertip, facing the offensive team 14 m away. The object of the game is to try and throw the disc through the opposing team and within the reach of at least 1 player, without the opposing team catching the disc cleanly using only one hand or body part at a time. If the throw is successful, the offensive team receives a point. If the throw is outside the reach of the opposing team, or the thrown disc is vertical (over 90 degrees to the ground), the defensive team receives a point. A clean catch results in no points, however the person who ultimately caught the disc is required to return the throw.

History

Guts is a game of lightning reactions, extreme eye-hand coordination, and daring unlike any other sport. But what you may not know is that the birth of all other disc sports, including Ultimate and Disc Golf, arose out of the festival atmosphere that was the International Frisbee Tournament (IFT), a Guts tournament started in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan USA in 1957. Guts is truely the "Grand-daddy" of all disc sports and the "original" X-treme sport!
